Students recount terror of Scott County school bus crash

Virginia State Police said an 18 year-old woman from Hiltons, Virginia was seriously injured when she rear-ended a Scott County School bus Tuesday afternoon.

It happened about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday on Route 58 near Route 614.A State Police spokeswoman said the bus was traveling east and had stopped to drop off two students when a 1998 Honda Accord driven by Star Shaffer rear-ended the school bus.

Shaffer was airlifted by Med-Flight helicopter to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of what State Police called "serious but non-life threatening injuries.Shaffer was not wearing a seat belt, police said.Seven seven middle and high school students were on the bus at the time of the crash. The two students exiting the bus at the stop sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation," said State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller. Charges are pending."Route 58 was closed for more than an hour because of the crash.
