STOCKTON, CA : Man killed in collision after speeding off I-5 in south Stockton on Friday, 4th November 2016
A motorist died after colliding with another car while traveling at a high rate of speed Friday afternoon in south Stockton.
The unidentified male motorist was going north on Interstate 5 in a Mitsubishi sedan about 3:25 p.m. when he exited the freeway at Downing Avenue. Witnesses said the Mitsubishi appeared to be going nearly 100 mph.
The Mitsubishi collided with an Acura sedan that appeared to be traveling west on Downing Avenue, witnesses said. The Mitsubishi rolled multiple times, ejecting the driver. He died at the scene, said Officer Joe Silva, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department.
The Mitsubishi rolled up the onramp on the north side of Downing Avenue and came to rest on its roof about 200 feet from the point of impact. The driver's body was five to 10 yards away from the car.
The Acura was occupied by a young woman and two children. They did not appear to be hurt.
Silva confirmed that the Mitsubishi was traveling at a high rate of speed, saying the preliminary investigation into the collision indicated that speed was a factor.
Police called traffic investigators out to process the scene. Downing Avenue was closed between Manthey Road and French Camp Turnpike. The Downing Avenue offramp from northbound I-5 was also closed. Traffic controls were expected to remain in place for hours for investigation and cleanup, Silva said.
