Richmond, VA : After crash, man exits car and is struck by motorist on I-4 on Sunday, January 8th 2017
A Series of back-to-back crashes led to a man being killed Sunday on Interstate 4 after he exited his car and was struck by a motorist, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
The incident started about 5 a.m., when Lori Jones, 25, of Orlando veered into the back of a woman's vehicle near Davenport, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donna Wood said.
The woman, 54-year-old Tammy Ann Riley, of West Virginia, pulled over to the side of the interstate while Jones stopped in the left lane as her airbags deployed, deputies said.
Right after, another driver hit the back of Jones' vehicle, pushing her off into the shoulder, Wood said.
Joseph Riley's car was severely damaged after crashing into the back of her vehicle. The 57-year-old's car stopped in the left lane, and he got out near the shoulder of the interstate, Wood said. That's when a fourth driver, in the left lane, veered toward the wrecks and saw the damage that had littered the interstate.
The driver, Peter Moran, 57, tried to move out of the way when he saw he was about to hit Riley's car. He made a sharp left turn and hit Riley, who was still standing outside his vehicle, Wood said.
Riley "was carried a short distance on the hood" before he rolled off. First responders declared him dead at the scene of the crash.
Deputies are continuing to investigate the crash, which led to a portion of Interstate 4 being shut down for about five hours.
