PEORIA, IL : Peoria police officer's injuries serious after three-vehicle crash at southbound Sterling Avenue at Bainter Lane on Tuesday, 11th February, 2020
A Peoria police officer sustained what are being called serious injuries after a three-car crash that occurred while the officer was responding to a call.
The crash occurred at southbound Sterling Avenue at Bainter Lane, according to Peoria Police spokeswoman Amy Dotson.
With squad-vehicle lights and sirens activated, the officer was responding to a call related to an intrusion alarm about 7:30 a.m.when a vehicle on Bainter turned left onto Sterling. The cars collided and a third vehicle also was involved.
The officer’s injuries were considered serious, according to Dotson, although not life-threatening. The officer was taken to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, according to the Peoria Fire Department.
The driver of the vehicle that turned from Bainter had to be extricated by emergency personnel and also was taken to St. Francis but was conscious and alert. The third vehicle’s driver reported no injuries, and that car sustained only minor damage.
Meanwhile, the police sport-utility vehicle sat in the intersection, its front end gone almost completely. Bits of glass, plastic and metal were scattered.
Sterling remained closed at that intersection while authorities continued to investigate. The thoroughfare reopened about 9:45 a.m.
