Parma, OH : 34-year-old man crashes car into Mr. Chicken restaurant in Parma on Thursday morning, March 19, 2015
Mr. Chicken has released surveillance video of a passed-out driver crashing through a glass window and into the lobby of its Parma restaurant.
The driver, who was not injured, can be seen getting out of the car about 15 seconds after it crashed.
The 34-year-old man suffered an undisclosed medical emergency and lost consciousness about 8 a.m. Thursday while northbound on Ridge Road. His car crossed the southbound lanes, went over the sidewalk and into Mr. Chicken, police said.
Parma Fire Department paramedics treated the man at the scene, and a family member drove him home.
The car was traveling about 30 mph when it destroyed the restaurant's glass windows and all of its furniture, owner Michael Simens said in a statement released by the company.
"The vehicle came to rest in the middle of our newly renovated lobby, destroying most of the new renovations," the statement says. "Fortunately the driver was not injured and no employees or customers were in the building at the time of the accident."
The restaurant's drive-thru opened at 10:30 a.m. Simens said the lobby would reopen by 4 p.m.
"This is kind of a good news, bad news situation," Simens said in the statement. "The good news is no one was hurt in the accident. The bad news is we just finished a very extensive remodeling of our lobby that now features a runaway car in the dining area. But hopefully we can get the Ridge Road location re-remodeled in short order and get started on our other seven stores!"
Mr. Chicken is a family-owned business founded in 1968. The Parma restaurant opened in 1998 and is one of eight locations in Greater Cleveland.
