A tractor-trailer wandered into the breakdown lane to hit a disabled SUV, injuring the SUV driver before crashing into the trees in the median of Interstate 195, police reported.
The crash tangled eastbound traffic for an hour after the incident at 6:35 a.m. Tuesday. Westbound lanes were squeezed beginning at 10 a.m. as heavy duty tow trucks pulled the tractor-trailer from the median.
A 55-year-old man from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the driver of the SUV, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence by Swansea Rescue, according to State Police Lt. Thomas Ryan. The driver of the tractor trailer, a 59-year-old man from Bernville, Pennsylvania, was treated at the scene for bumps and bruisers, troopers report.
“A 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was stationary in the breakdown lane,” Ryan said. “He was waiting for a AAA tow.”
The Pennsylvania man was driving a 2007 Peterbuilt tractor towing a full-size trailer.
