Grinnell, IA : Crash along Interstate 80 on Wednesday left an SUV partially suspended on a fence post hovering above a drainage culvert on September 3rd 2014
A crash along Interstate 80 near Grinnell Wednesday left an SUV partially suspended on a fence post hovering above a drainage culvert.
The crash was reported about 5:29 a.m. near mile marker 195 in Poweshiek County.
Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Scott Bright said the preliminary crash report leads investigators to believe that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel.
The ISP crash report shows the SUV was traveling east in the left lane when it crossed into the right land and entered the ditch. The vehicle hit a culvert and came to rest on top of a fence post with only its left front tire making contact with the ground.
The driver, later identifed as Robert Kish, 31, of Shelton, Connecticut, was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals in very serious condition. The passenger, Timothy Degganara, 32, or Deby, Connecticut, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a Grinnell hospital.
Bright said Degganara was asleep and awoke to the car bouncing around on its top.
The crash remains under investigation.
