Lighthouse Point, Florida
A man has been arrested on DUI charges following a Sunday night crash in Lighthouse Point that left a woman paralyzed and in critical condition.
Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Michael Anguille, 29, was speeding while traveling northbound on N. Federal Highway in his 2013 Nissan Altima.
Deputies said Anguille swerved into the center lane and crashed into the rear passenger side of 55-year-old Kim Smith’s Ford Explorer Sport, which was traveling in the same direction within the speed limit.
The impact caused Smith’s car to rotate counterclockwise and slide into the median. Her SUV then rolled over and, while upside down, the driver side door collided with a large tree in the median.
Smith and Anguille were both taken to Broward Health North Medical Center. Anguille did not suffer serious injuries, and was taken into custody after he was released from the hospital.
Records show Anguille has two prior DUI and drug-related arrests from April 2014 and May 2011.
"My mother was like part of the community, part of everything," said Smith's son, Daniel Rainey-Smith. "She was a church-going lady -- all this and this innocent bystander just gets hit out of nowhere."
Rainey-Smith said his mother is in intensive care, and suffered multiple fractures and possible brain damage.
Despite his mother's grave condition, Rainey-Smith is counting is blessings because his 2-year-old son should have been in the car with her.
"It's the normal routine -- every Sunday I have my son and from what the cops told me, where his car seat is on that side of the car -- he wouldn't have made it," said Rainey-Smith.
