Brockton,MA : Elderly man nearly drives off bridge in single-vehicle I-495 crash on April, Thursday 12th 2018
An elderly man who lost control of his SUV while driving south on I-495 almost drove off a highway bridge onto a railroad crossing, according to Raynham Fire Chief James Januse.
“Another 7, 8 feet and he would have gone over,” Januse said.
The unidentified elderly man, he said, was taken by ambulance to Brockton’s Good Samaritan Medical Center following the 5 p.m. single-vehicle crash.
Januse said the driver veered onto and drove for some distance on the median strip before crossing into the breakdown lane.
“He was teetering on the bridge,” said Januse, who speculated that the driver might have experienced a medical emergency.
He noted that the driver was using an oxygen breathing device.
The crash occurred just north of Exit 8 in Raynham.
Januse said before the man could be safely extricated, firefighters tied down the SUV to the front of their fire engine to ensure that it didn’t topple over.
“It’s a 30-foot drop,” Januse said.
A private tow truck operator then used a winch to lift the vehicle so that it could be towed away.
Januse said Raynham and state police were also on scene.
