Lafayette, IN : North White High School teens die in car crash in White County on Sunday, April 9, 2017
Two teenagers died Sunday when their pickup truck was rear-ended, forcing them off the road into a tree, according to the White County Sheriff's Office.
Chaz Rodziewicz, 17, of Monticello, and Dylan Mullis, 16, of Monon, were pinned in the 2004 Chevy S-10 and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.
Police said the teens were northbound on Indiana 39 about 1:25 p.m. when a 1999 Jeep driven by Grace Dodson, 16, of Monticello, swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid rear-ending the truck.
The Jeep swerved back into the northbound lane to avoid an oncoming vehicle and crashed into the truck, which was pushed off the right side of the road into a tree, the news release states.
Police said the Jeep also slid off the road further north and came to rest in a wooded area.
Dodson was taken to IU Health Arnett Hospital and was discharged as of Monday, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The crash remains under investigation.
Rodziewicz and Mullis were students and baseball teammates at North White High School, according to North White School Corp. Supt. Teresa Gremaux.
Counselors, pastors and a therapy dog were available Monday for grieving students, Gremaux said.
"The loss of these students has left a void in our school that will be difficult to mend," Gremaux said in a post to the school corporation's Facebook page.
