LEATHERWOOD, VA : One person was killed and another airlifted following a head-on collision on Sunday, September 10, 2017
One person was killed and another airlifted to the hospital Sunday following a head-on collision on Chatham Road (Va. 57).
The collision occurred shortly before 7 p.m. about 6 1/2 miles up Chatham Road from Va. 58.
According to First Sgt. M.C. Davis of the Virginia State Police, a 1998 Mitsubishi was traveling west on Chatham Road when it crossed a center line and hit a 1998 Ford pickup truck which was going east.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was killed, Davis said, and the 56-year-old passenger was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the pickup was a 19-year-old Coleman Falls resident, Davis said, adding that he went to the hospital but his injuries did not appear serious.
All three were wearing their seat belts, Davis said, and no one was ejected from either vehicle.
Well more than a dozen marked emergency vehicles were seen at the scene, as well as the personal vehicles of several volunteers. Vehicles seen were from the Dyers Store Volunteer Fire Department, Dyers Store Crash & Rescue, Axton Life Saving Crew, Henry County Public Safety and the Virginia State Police.
Eastbound traffic was diverted around the scene onto Stoney Mountain Road, and westbound traffic detoured through Lawrence Drive, which goes to Mountain Valley Road.
The brown Ford pickup had been carrying a muddy four-wheeler. Two other pickup trucks, also hauling muddy four-wheelers, had stopped behind the site of the collision. The men driving those trucks told law enforcement officers that they were friends of the driver of the pickup. One of them drove the four-wheeler off the damaged truck and into the trailer of another of the pickups.
The site of the accident was a few miles from The Catfish Pond, a popular place for driving four-wheelers, located off Dyers Store Road.
The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
