ST. PETERSBURG, FL : Uber driver, passenger seriously injured in crash on Saturday, 22nd October 2016

Authorities say an Uber driver and his passenger were hospitalized with serious injuries after the driver pulled onto the path of an oncoming car.
St. Petersburg police say 38-year-old Robert Marthaller picked up his passenger after midnight Saturday. After his passenger, 29-year-old Gary Bruce, got into the backseat, authorities say the Uber driver made a U-turn and pulled directly into the path of a Ford Mustang. The Mustang's driver and passenger sustained minor injuries but authorities say Bruce's injuries are serious and that Marthaller's injuries are life threatening.
Under terms and conditions that riders agree to, the app-based ride-hailing companies say they aren't legally liable for the safety of their drivers or the quality of their services. That's because the drivers are independent contractors, not employees.
