Hamblen County, TN : Whitesburg woman injured in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 11-E near the Hamblen-Hawkins county line on Monday, Oct 12, 2015

A Whitesburg woman was hospitalized this morning after she was involved in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 11-E near the Hamblen-Hawkins county line, according to the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Department.

Peggy Richardson, 74, Beacon Light Road, was alive but unresponsive when Deputy Trevor Snowden arrived to investigate the 7:47 a.m. crash. Snowden says Richardson did not regain consciousness while on the scene.

The woman was eastbound on the highway when her 1997 GMC Sonoma traveled off the right side of the roadway into a ditch, which prevented the driver-side door from fully opening.

Members of the Morristown Rescue Squad cut the door off the vehicle and first responders carried Richardson to the waiting ambulance. The intention was to fly Richardson from Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Snowden says it’s unclear if the flight took place because the helicopter may have been grounded due to foggy weather.

Richardson’s vehicle came to rest a short distance from the railroad tracks. Train traffic was halted until the vehicle was removed, according to Snowden.
