Norwell, MA : Abington woman badly injured when Ford Taurus collided with a 10-wheel Mack truck on Route 123 on Tuesday morning, April 12, 2016

A 19-year-old Abington woman was seriously injured Tuesday morning when her Ford Taurus collided with a 10-wheel Mack truck on Route 123.

Police Chief Ted Ross said the accident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. The Taurus was traveling west on Route 123 (Main Street), near the Jacobs Lane intersection, when it crossed the center line and struck the Mack truck almost head-on.

Ross said the driver was trapped inside her car and had to be extricated by Norwell firefighters. The driver of the 2001 Mack wasn’t injured.
Initial reports said the crash involved three vehicles, but Ross said only the Taurus and the truck collided.

The Taurus driver was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth by a fire department ambulance. Ross said morning weather was too bad to take her to the hospital in a medical helicopter.
The driver’s name wasn’t immediately available because family members hadn’t been contacted. Ross said the cause of the crash is under investigation.

He said a half-mile stretch of Route 123 between Jacobs Lane and Prospect Street was closed to traffic for three and a half hours.
“It was a mess,” he said.
