La Porte, IN : MC man dies in crash after striking tree on Sunday, 25th September 2016
A Michigan City man was killed and a woman injured Sunday night following a high speed collision with a tree on CR-1000N near CR-125E.
Joseph A. Hixon Jr., 21, was pronounced dead at the scene by La Porte County Deputy Coroner Jessica Hagler with the cause of death determined to be massive blunt force trauma.
The passenger was identified as a 20-year-old Michigan City woman. She was transported to the hospital by La Porte County EMS with non-life threatening injuries.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff's Department, deputies arrived at CR-1000N near CR- 125E at 7:50 p.m. where they found Hixon's beige 2006 Mazda impacted with a tree on the south side of the road.
Captain Mike Kellems said deputies arrived 10 minutes after the crash.
"The reports were that (Hixon) was unconscious the entire time they were en route and not breathing," Kellems said.
Hixon was found pinned inside the car and was already deceased when deputies arrived. The passenger was also pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters.
A witness traveling westbound saw the Mazda lose control while traveling at a high rate of speed and leave the roadway before hearing the impact with the tree.
Kellems said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, rather reckless driving as the Mazda was traveling too quickly up a dangerous hill.
"He went eastbound over the hill crest at a high rate of speed and lost control of his car," Kellems said. "There was a vehicle coming westbound and in order to avoid that, he swerved and lost control and struck the tree."
The sheriff's department's investigation determined the Mazda to be traveling about 80 miles per hour prior to impact. Noted were about 165 feet of skid marks left by the Mazda.
The speed limit in the area is posted at 45 miles per hour.
"It is considered a dangerous road," Kellems said. "That hill crest is a very steep hill crest. If you go over it with any speed at all, it'll launch you airborne."
The passenger was stated to be able to walk on her own after being extricated from the vehicle, but complained of leg pain to EMS.
