BIRMINGHAM, AL : Waterloo girl injured in wreck improving on Thursday, February 16th 2017
A Waterloo girl injured in a traffic accident Thursday remains at Birmingham's Children’s Hospital, but family members said she is improving.
Family members said today that Georgiana Kavich, 9, is off the ventilator and is expected to be moved out of the intensive care unit today to a step-down room and will begin physical therapy.
The child was transferred to Birmingham on Thursday night following the accident.
Troopers said Kavich was injured just after 4 p.m. when she was struck by a 2007 Acura driven by Betty Benson, 72, of Waterloo. Officials at the scene said the car struck the child, then ran into the school building. Troopers said Benson was not injured.
The impact knocked a post away from an awning. The post struck a teacher, Marissa Inman, 36, of Waterloo. Emergency personnel at the scene said Inman was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital by private vehicle, where she was treated and later released.
