Worcester, MA : severely injured in an automobile crash on April, Thursday 20th 2017
A Sutton Memorial High School graduate and Rhode Island College student who was severely injured in an automobile crash on Route 146 in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, Tuesday, has died, according to the college’s athletic director.
Victoria L. Demers, 18, of Sutton, a freshman on the RIC’s women’s basketball team, was critically injured when she lost control of her car, which hit a median and collided with another vehicle.
RIC’s Athletics Director Don Tencher announced Demers’ death Thursday in a news release, calling her “a force to be reckoned with on and off the court.”
“She had an infectious personality that affected everyone in a very positive manner and her freshman season exhibited just a glimpse of the positive things to come on the court,” said Tencher’s statement.
The women’s basketball coach, Glenn Senecal, said that he could see that Demers had a bright future ahead of her after her freshman season at RIC. He described Demers’ personality, her smile and energy as “second to none.”
“We are going to miss her work ethic both on and off the basketball court,” Senecal said. “Whatever Vic did, she always went above and beyond what was expected of her.”
A psychology major at RIC, Demers was a 2016 high honors graduate of Sutton High.
The driver of the second car in Tuesday’s crash was identified as Maria Ortiz, 23, of 18 Fletcher St., Central Falls, Rhode Island. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for treatment of minor injuries, the state police said.
