Springfield, MA : Salem hit-and-run crash injures woman, two kids on Monday, October 31, 2016
Springfield, Massachusetts
Two 10-year-old children and a woman suffered serious injuries when they were struck by an accused hit-and-run drunk driver last night near Salem’s Halloween festivities.
One child was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital and the other to North Shore Medical Center in Salem, both for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Salem Deputy Fire Chief Alan Dionne said.
A woman who was with the children was also injured in the crash, which occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at the entrance to the Salem commuter rail station. It was not clear last night whether the children and the women were related.
The driver, an adult male who initially fled the scene of the crash but returned, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene, police said. The suspect’s name was not released last night.
The crash occurred at the corner of Bridge and Washington streets as people were heading to the station after Halloween events in the city, Dionne said. The festivities were about a block away.
One vehicle was involved in the crash. Police were questioning the driver on the scene last night. The state police accident reconstruction team was called to the scene.
