Hammond, LA : A motorcyclist from Covington died on April, Friday 21st 2017
A motorcyclist from Covington died Friday in a car crash on La. 435 near Lake Street in Abita Springs.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop L, Dwight Donnell Johnson, 28, died in the two-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m.
Johnson was riding a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on La. 435. Physical evidence and witness statements indicated he was traveling at a high rate of speed and passing several other vehicles prior to the crash, troopers said.
A 2000 Ford F-350 driven by 60-year-old Abita Springs resident, Earl Gregory, entered La. 435 from a private drive.
The truck was towing a tandem axle gooseneck trailer loaded with pine logs.
As the F-350 entered the road, Johnson's motorcycle crashed into the rear axle of the trailer. Johnson was thrown from the motorcycle and sustaied severe injuries despite wearing a DOT-approved helmet.
An ambulance took him to St. Tammany Parish Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Gregory was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was not injured, troopers said.
Impairment is not suspected to have been a contributing factor. As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
