Chicopee, MA : Driver in critical condition after hitting tree in Chicopee early Thursday, December 17, 2015

Officials say an unidentified driver severely hurt after a vehicle struck a tree in western Massachusetts remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Officer Michael Wilk tells The Republican of Springfield the crash occurred Thursday around 3 a.m. when a car slammed into a tree on New Ludlow Road in Chicopee.

Wilk declined to identify the driver because he was unsure if the person's family had been notified of the accident.

The motorist was taken to Baystate Medical Center and remained hospitalized as of Thursday afternoon.

Wilks says an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
