Rehoboth,DE : Driver airlifted after crash near Assateague closes highway on September, Saturday 9th 2017

One of three drivers involved in a crash on state Route 611 toward Assateague Island late Saturday afternoon was flown by medical helicopter to Baltimore in serious condition, Maryland State Police said.

William Bandorick III, 47, of Berlin was driving a Jaguar south Saturday at about 4:18 p.m. when he crossed into northbound traffic, police said. He struck a Kia Spectra going north, then hit a Dodge pickup truck, police said.

Bandorick was flown to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in serious condition.

The driver of the Kia, Richard Lewis Dize of Berlin, was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, police said. The driver of the Dodge pickup, Richard L. Kraskin, of Milltown, New Jersey, was not hurt.

Police said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash covered "the entire roadway" in the 7800 block of Route 611, and the road was closed to motorists for several hours as emergency services crews worked to attend to the injured and collect evidence, state police said.

Route 611 goes to the Assateague Island National Seashore, a 37-mile stretch that is part of the national and state park system. The park is about 8 miles south of Ocean City.
