Portage, IN : 93-year-old woman dies in hit-and-run collision in northwestern Indiana on Tuesday night, December 29, 2015

A 93-year-old Portage woman died at a Chicago-area trauma center late Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident, police said.

Evelyn Mayden of the 3700 block of Devanshire Street, was pronounced dead at 10:11 p.m. Tuesday night, Cook County medical examiner's representatives said. An official cause and manner of death was expected to be released after an autopsy late Wednesday.

Portage police were called at 5:23 p.m. to the intersection of U.S. 6 and Willowcreek Road for a possible hit-and-run. When officers arrived, they found Mayden lying on the side of Willowcreek Road in the street next to the curb with several people surrounding her.

Witnesses told police the woman was struck by a vehicle that left the scene southbound on Willowcreek Road. Officers said Mayden had a large cut on her head and was conscious and speaking.

One witness told police she saw the vehicle strike Mayden. The witness said Mayden's vehicle, later identified as a 2004 Suzuki Colt, became stuck on the concrete barrier as she drove past. The woman said Mayden got out of her vehicle and tried to walk across Willowcreek Road toward the Walgreen's there.

As Mayden neared the sidewalk, a large, dark SUV drove past and hit her, the witness said. Mayden may have been struck by the side of the vehicle or possibly a mirror, according to the witness.

Mayden was initially transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary before being transferred via medical helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police said Mayden was being treated for injuries in the emergency room when she died.

Police said the suspect vehicle should have front passenger side damage or possibly damage to the outside passenger side mirror.
