A 19-year-old man from Lehigh Acres is in critical condition after he lost control of his car and was struck by a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon on Interstate 95.

Steve Jeannot lost control of his 2004 Toyota Corolla and veered into the left concrete barrier on southbound I-95, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The impact caused the car to slide into the path of the tractor-trailer.

The 45-year-old Abbeville, Georgia, man driving the tractor-trailer was uninjured in the crash, which closed all lanes of southbound traffic on I-95 near Pembroke Road for several hours.

According to the FHP, the driver of the car was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Traffic was backed up for several miles as vehicles were diverted off I-95 at Hollywood Boulevard.

All southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 6:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
