Fair Oaks, CA : 2 people killed in fiery wrong-way crash in Fair Oaks early Monday morning, September 26,2016

Two people on a motorcycle were killed early Monday morning in a fiery wrong-way crash on a busy Fair Oaks road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Brandon Fernandez, 28, was driving a silver Hyundai in the wrong direction just after 3 a.m. on Madison Avenue near Lincoln Oaks Drive when his vehicle hit a motorcycle that was carrying a man and a woman in their 20s, officers said.

The car and the motorcycle then caught fire, badly burning the pair on the bike. Fernandez managed to get out of his vehicle and walk to the sidewalk, according to investigators.

The pair were pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP have identified the woman as Maggie Schooley, 25. The man's identity has not been released.

Fernandez remained at the scene and was arrested on felony charges of driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher and felony manslaughter, the CHP said.

"We have officers that are specially-trained to do a 360-degree inspection on these vehicles," CHP Officer Chad Hertzell said. "They're going to be going over these things with a fine tooth comb, seeing if there was anything wrong with it, on top of all that. But, we know the primary cause was the driver's DUI."

All westbound lanes of Madison Avenue were shut down at Linda Sue Way, but the road has since reopened.

No additional details have been released.
