Toledo, OH : Mother and her unborn child killed in a multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 71 in Erie County on Saturday, February 14, 2015
The Milan Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash Saturday in the westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike. The crash occurred near mile post 125.6 in Berlin Township.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., the Berea Dispatch Center began to receive calls of a multi-vehicle crash with serious injuries. After investigation of the scene, the wreck contained eight total vehicles, five of them being commercial tractor-trailers. All westbound lanes were blocked.
Beverly Smith, 32, of Middleville, Michigan, and her unborn child have died as a result of their injuries. Her husband, Eric Smith, 33, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. Mrs. Smith was sitting in the passenger seat of the 2012 Ford F-150 driven by her husband.
The truck was stuck under a tractor-trailer of a commercial vehicle, trapping the family for an extended period of time. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were taken to Firelands Hospital in Sandusky.
Six other people endured injuries as a result of the crash, all of them refusing treatment and transportation to a hospital. Assisting on scene was the Milan Township Fire Department, Berlin Township Fire, Huron EMS, Perkins Township EMS, Interstate Towing, Madison’s Towing and the Ohio Turnpike Maintenance Department. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office and Erie County EMA were assisting but were not on the scene.
Even though the investigation into the crash is in the early stages, alcohol or drugs are not suspected at this time. Heavy snowfall and limited visibility were contributing factors in the fatal crash. The investigation will be completed by the Milan Post with assistance from the Bucyrus District Crash Reconstruction Team.
