ADA, OK : Two Ada-based musicians died when their vehicles collided in Seminole County on Monday, December, 18th 2017
Two Ada-based musicians died when their vehicles collided head-on early Monday in Seminole County.
Singer and guitarist Connor Hicks, 20, and musician and Chickasaw Cultural instructor Jeremy Wallace, 42, were killed in a crash four miles south of Bowlegs on U.S. 377, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The patrol reported the accident took place on a two-lane road shortly after midnight when Hicks' vehicle, traveling south, crossed left of center and hit Wallace's vehicle head-on. Both drivers were alone. Foggy weather conditions were mentioned in the report.
Wallace, a member of the Chickasaw and Mississippi Choctaw tribes, was a popular fixture at the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur. He was a skilled dancer, athlete, craftsman, actor and artist. Wallace was known to build handcrafted bows, arrows, drums and blow dart guns.
He had roots in both Mississippi and Oklahoma. The husband and father's public performances and dedication to the preservation of Native traditions has been highlighted multiple times by the Chickasaw Nation. His drumming and stomp dancing not only educated audiences, but also was a vital part of his own life, he said in a Chickasaw TV video. Wallace's striking face can been seen in multiple paintings, sculptures and book covers.
Hicks, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, was a former student at the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma. He was a well-respected sideman and songwriter whose friends lovingly referred to him as John Mayer, his performance idol, because of a shared "it" factor. The Ada native was relatively new to the guitar but after a couple years of practice, he impressed bandmates with an advanced level of playing.
