EL CERRITO, CA : Man injured in major multiple-vehicle crash on Sunday, March 26th 2017
A portion of San Pablo Avenue was temporarily closed Sunday evening following a multi-vehicle injury accident that may have been triggered by reckless driving.
Police shut down a portion of San Pablo Avenue between Burlingame and Waldo avenues after responding to initial reports of a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found a man in the southbound lane of San Pablo Avenue, and three vehicles in the northbound lane.
Officers later determined the man lying in the street was ejected from one of the three vehicles. He was transported by helicopter to a local trauma center and was in critical condition with broken bones but is expected to survive, according to El Cerrito Police Department Sgt. Jose Delatorre.
After speaking with the driver of the vehicle from which the man was ejected, police conducted a DUI investigation and arrested the driver, a 20-year-old man from San Pablo.
According to a witness, the man who was ejected had been sitting on the top of the vehicle with his legs “dangling through the moonroof.” The driver began swinging the car wildly from side to side, and the passenger suddenly flew off the roof and crumpled into a heap on the asphalt. The car spun into a U-turn and collided with another vehicle, which the El Cerrito Fire Department reported was a minivan.
“It was horrible to watch,” said witness Scot Hacker, of El Cerrito.
The vehicle that was hit then plowed into another minivan.
Police plan to forward the case to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.
