Darlington, S.C : Two Darlington County firefighters injured in crash on Sunday afternoon, September 25, 2016
Darlington, South Carolina
One Darlington County firefighter remains in the hospital after the tanker he was riding in crashed en route to a structure fire on Sunday afternoon.
Two firefighters were in the tanker at the time of the crash, according to Chief Ricky Flowers of the Darlington County Fire Department. Flowers said the tanker they were driving veered off of the road and a possible over-correction issue may have been the cause of the crash.
"With these large trucks it (over-correcting) is very easy to do," Flowers said. "It is my understanding there was another car in the vicinity and the driver was trying his best to miss the car."
The driver succeeded in avoiding the other vehicle, but the tanker ended up on its side. Both firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash and were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Flowers said one of the firefighters had multiple lacerations and concussion-like symptoms but was released from the hospital on Monday morning. The second firefighter's injuries were not released but Flowers said he is in stable condition.
"He's in good spirits and giving the nurses a hard time," Flowers said jokingly. "He is doing a lot better."
Flowers said the firefighter will stay "at least one more night in the hospital." He would not disclose the identity of either of the injured firefighters.
The totaled tanker is one of six older vehicles the Darlington County Fire Department owns. That tanker, in particular, was set to be replaced in February.
According to Flowers, the loss of the tanker will be a minor setback but will not prevent the department from running any fewer calls.
