Arnold, MD : Two people died in a car accident at Rt 2 and College Parkway in Arnold Tuesday night, May 5, 2015
Anne Arundel County police say alcohol use and failure to obey a red left turn arrow were factors in a crash that killed two people Tuesday night in Arnold.
Police identified the pair Wednesday morning as 32-year-old Manuel Valencia of Arnold and 56-year-old Charles Nossick of Severna Park.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Route 2 at College Parkway.
Police said Valencia was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra south on Route 2 when he turned left at College Parkway, failing to obey a red left turn signal arrow, into the path of a 1999 GMC Suburban driven by Nossick.
The GMC struck the passenger side of the Nissan, causing it to overturn, police said. The vehicles eventually came to rest after the GMC pushed the Nissan sideways out of the intersection and into the traffic signal support pole.
Valencia was pronounced dead at the scene. Nossick, who was ejected, was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with critical injuries, police said. He died shortly after his arrival.
The cause of the collision appears to be the failure of Valencia to obey the red left turn signal arrow, police said. Alcohol use by Valencia also appears to be a contributing factor, police said.
Ritchie Highway was closed in both directions after the crash, but reopened late Tuesday night.
It was the second serious crash in Arnold in less than 24 hours.
