One person is dead after a head-on crash on Louisiana 21 in Washington Parish.

Louisiana State Police say it happened about 9 a.m. Saturday near High Point Drive.

The crash claimed the life of 73-year-old Jerry Koppenol, who was pronounced dead by the parish coroner's office.

Investigators say a van driven by 20-year-old Nicholas Hatchett, of Covington, was traveling south on Louisiana 21 when he entered the northbound lane in an attempt to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone.
At the same time, a sport utility vehicle driven by 60-year-old Brenda Koppenol was traveling northbound on Louisiana 21. She entered the shoulder in an attempt to avoid Hatchett's car and the two cars collided on the shoulder.

Three juveniles in Koppenol's car were moderately injured. Hatchett was critically injured.
