A 77-year-old Chicago man died after a wreck early Wednesday morning in Gregg County.

At 1:22 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 in Gregg County, just east of the city of Kilgore.

A preliminary crash investigation revealed a 2016 International Cub Cadet truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling east on the highway in the outside lane when a 2002 Mazda Protégé entered the outside lane in front of the truck tractor from the improved shoulder.

The truck struck the Mazda, causing the car to impact the guardrail and then rebound back into the outside lane and become trapped between the truck and its towed semi-trailer.

The Mazda and the towed semi-trailer caught fire and came to rest on the improved shoulder.

The driver of the Mazda was identified as Amando Vega, of Chicago. Vega was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body taken to Rader funeral home in Kilgore.

The driver of the truck tractor was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center, where he was treated and released for injuries that were not life threatening.
