Texas man arrested for DWI in crash
A 35-year-old Texas man was arrested early Monday after driving the wrong way on Interstate 10 west on the Bonnet Carré Spillway and causing three accidents involving 18-wheelers, Louisiana State Police said.
Crews spent much of the morning cleaning up the wreckage, closing down part of the highway for much of the morning. All lanes on I-10 were reopened by 2 p.m., and congestion began to ease, said Trooper Melissa Matey, a police spokeswoman.
Police arrested Michael Gomez, 35, of Pearland, Texas, booking him with driving while intoxicated, reckless operation and driving the wrong way on a one-way street, Matey said.
Gomez appeared in 29th Judicial District Court in Hahnville by video. Judge M. Lauren Lemmon found probable cause existed for the charges and Gomez remained held without bond. He was ordered to return to court Wednesday.
The people involved in the accident suffered only minor injuries, Matey said.
Police said Gomez drove his SUV the wrong way on I-10 when he came upon the first 18-wheeler truck, which swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle. The driver of the rig lost control and the truck flipped over, Matey said. Crews worked Monday to remove the contents from the road. The SUV then continued east-bound before crashing head-on into a second 18-wheeler, Matey said.
A third crash occurred after another vehicle collided with the rear of a third 18-wheeler that was slowed by the congestion, Matey said.
