Springfield, IL : River Forest, Illinois State Police investigating 2-car crash on Wednesday, 26th October 2016

A Two-car crash Wednesday morning left two drivers hospitalized, and the River Forest Police Department is seeking help from the Illinois State Police to determine a cause.

According to Deputy Police Chief James O'Shea, the crash occurred at approximately 7:55 a.m. on Thatcher Avenue just north of Division Street.

"We had two vehicles, one traveling northbound on Thatcher and one traveling southbound on Thatcher," O'Shea said. "The northbound vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic, and there was a head-on collision between the two vehicles."

O'Shea described the cars as a passenger vehicle and a small SUV, and said each had only one occupant at the time of the crash.

"Both parties sustained injuries," O'Shea said. "One party appears to have sustained more injuries than the other. I wouldn't say [the injuries] are substantial, but I wouldn't call them minor."

One of the drivers had to be extricated from a vehicle by fire department personnel, and both drivers were taken to local hospitals, O'Shea said.

While he did not provide ages or genders of the victims, O'Shea said one driver was from Elmwood Park and the other was from Stone Park.

Following the crash, the Illinois State Police accident reconstruction team was called to assist, police said. O'Shea said the rainy weather that morning may have also been a cause.

"At this time, [rain] is being looked at as a factor, but all the potential causes of the accident are still under investigation," O'Shea said. "The investigation may go on for a while."

With fall and winter weather arriving shortly, O'Shea asked drivers to remain extra cautious when on the roadway.

"[We ask] for drivers to please watch for changing weather and road conditions and to adjust driving habits to caution on the side of safety," O'Shea said.
