Austintown, OH : One dead in Fiery 6 vehicle crash on Ohio Turnpike in Mahoning County on Wednesday, November 5, 2014
A fiery six vehicle crash involving a fire truck on the Ohio Turnpike killed a woman and injured a handful of people including firefighters on Wednesday.
Highway Patrol says the crash happened on the Turnpike in Canfield Township at about 11:25 a.m.
Troopers say an earlier crash was being attended to by Canfield Firefighters and an Ohio Turnpike employee, who had flashing lights on their track while assisting.
A Nissan SUV, driven by 27-year-old Karan Zorn of Maryland, stopped behind the fire truck when it was rear ended by a truck pulling a car hauler with two vehicles on it, according to Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the truck hauling the vehicles, driven by 25-year-old Allen Worley of Indiana, compressed the Nissan between it and the fire truck, causing it to catch fire and kill Zorn.
The force of the crash caused the fire truck to side swipe the Turnpike’s pick-up, injuring its driver, 52-year-old Michael Earnest, according to troopers.
Highway Patrol says the car hauler overturned into the left lane striking two vehicles as they were passing.
One of the vehicles, a 2012 Ford Edge, was driven by 71-year-old David Heath of Illinois. Heath received non-life threatening injuries.
The other vehicle, a Chrysler 200, was driven by 64-year-old David William of Pennsylvania. William was not injured.
Two Canfield Firefighters, 33-year-old Brian Blevins who was driving the fire truck and his passenger 40-year-old Troy Kolar, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Worley was flown to the hospital with what troopers described as non-incapacitating injuries.
The crash is remains under investigation.
