St. Lucie County, FL : 32-year-old Stuart man critically injured following a motorcycle crash on Hutchinson Island on Sunday, February 28, 2016

A 32-year-old Stuart man was critically injured following a Sunday motorcycle crash on Hutchinson Island, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Brett Allen Diekman was driving a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle south at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the 6500 block of South Ocean Drive, according to information from the FHP and the St. Lucie County Fire District.

Diekman was behind a southbound 2003 GMC sport utility vehicle driven by a 57-year-old Stuart man.

Diekman, who wasn't wearing a helmet, didn't slow down and put the motorcycle down on its left side. Diekman slid into the northbound lane, while his motorcycle hit the back of the SUV and a construction barrel before stopping.

Diekman was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce.

The SUV driver, Thomas Daly, wasn't hurt.
