Sevierville,TN : Sevierville man in critical condition after Chapman Highway crash on September, Friday 8th 2017

A Sevierville man is in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash on Chapman Highway on Friday morning.

John Wesley Cheek, 26, was traveling south on Chapman Highway, which is also U.S. Route 441, when he ran his vehicle off the left side of the road, traveled through a ditch and struck a rock embankment, according to Lt. Don Boshears of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The vehicle, a 2000 Ford Explorer, then crossed a driveway culvert and came to rest in the ditch. Cheek was trapped in the car and had to be extradited by first responders, Boshears said.

The crash is believed to have happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday, and the highway patrol was notified around 6:30 a.m.

Cheek was taken by Lifestar helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. A nursing supervisor there said Friday afternoon that he was in critical condition.

Charges in the case are pending, according to Boshears.
