Gilliam County , OR :Police: Wrong-way driver killed in fiery I-84 crash on Monday , june 22nd 2015
A wrong-way driver was killed in a fiery head-on crash with a semi hauling salmon on Interstate 84, according to police.Emergency crews responded to the head-on crash near Milepost 114 in Gilliam County at 11:15 p.m. Monday.Police had been receiving complaints about a wrong-way driver in the area. The crash occurred as Oregon State Police troopers began to respond.Investigators said a 1999 Jeep Cherokee was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes when it hit a 1999 Peterbilt truck.Both vehicles came to rest in the travel lanes and caught fire. The driver of the semi, identified as Michael McCright, 61, of Redmond, managed to escape without injury as both vehicles became fully engulfed.The driver of the Jeep, identified as Tyler Brown, 25, of Hermiston, was pronounced dead at the scene.Troopers said it is not known why he was driving in the wrong lane.The truck was loaded with recently harvested salmon, which took hours for fire crews to put out.Both directions of I-84 were closed for almost four hours until one lane in each direction could be opened.OSP was assisted by Sherman County Fire, Rufus Rural Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
