CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL : Woman died and girl hurt in collision on Sunday, November 27th 2016

A woman died and a girl was critically hurt in a two-car accident Sunday afternoon in Charlotte County.

According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, Mary Sorrentino, 51, of North Port, was northbound on Toledo Blade Boulevard and turning left onto U.S. 41. At the same time, Henry Newton Phillips, 73, of Port Charlotte was southbound on Toledo Blade, crossing over U.S. 41.

Sorrentino reportedly turned directly in front of Phillips and was struck by him. Phillips’ Honda CRV went into a spin. Sorrentino’s Mercury Mariner rolled over onto its side before landing upright.

Vicki Phillips, 71, of Port Charlotte, who was riding in Phillips’ car, died from her injuries, FHP says. She was wearing a seatbelt.

Lilly Sorrentino, 9, of North Port, who was riding in Sorrentino’s car, suffered critical injuries and was transported to Tampa General Hospital. Lilly was wearing a seatbelt or child restraint.

Sorrentino and Phillips suffered minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
