Southport, NC : A 18-years old Lily Beatini was killed on her way to school at NC 87 near Cougar Drive On Wednesday, May 25th, 2016
Southport, North Carolina
A South Brunswick High cheerleader was killed in a crash Wednesday morning on her way to school, an official said.
Lily Beatini, 18, died in the 10 a.m. crash on NC 87 near Cougar Drive.
According to Boiling Spring Lakes Police Chief Bradford Shirley, Beatini was southbound in an SUV when she ran off the road, overcorrected and lost control, striking a northbound Waste Industries truck.
Beatini, who was alone in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital via ambulance, Shirley said. He was uncertain which hospital.
The accident happened after students had returned to the school from an evacuation prompted by a bomb threat. Shirley said Beatini was not part of the evacuation and the bomb threat had no bearing on what happened.
Beatini was a senior and set to graduate June 11, Shirley said. The crash is being investigated by the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department with assistance from the NC State Highway Patrol.
In a short biography posted in an online chatroom set up in 2013 for a South Brunswick High Honors English Class, Beatini wrote that she and her three siblings moved to Oak Island in August 2013 from Connecticut.
“My hobbies include reading, going to the beach and hanging out with my friends. My favorite book is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," she wrote. "I want to go to college in my future to become a vet. This is because of my love for animals."
Jessica Swencki, spokeswoman for Brunswick County Schools, said Crisis Team members were at the school to provide support to students and staff.
