South Bend, IN : One person injured after car crashed into an electrical pole, rolled over and caught fire on South Bend on Monday, Aug 10, 2015

One man was hurt Monday after his car crashed into an electrical pole, rolled over and caught fire, forcing South Bend police to shut down a portion of Bendix Drive.

Police and fire crews responded about 11:30 a.m. to the 2600 block of Bendix Drive, north of Lathrop Drive. The driver, who was found conscious near his Toyota sedan, was taken to Memorial Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

South Bend Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Catanzarite said the man was apparently driving south on Bendix when he lost control of the car because of either a mechanical failure or a medical issue.
The car crashed into and snapped a power pole, leaving high-voltage wires to dangle over the west side of the street. Fire crews extinguished the burning car while keeping a safe distance from the unstable power lines, Catanzarite said.

It was unclear how long traffic would be diverted from Bendix Monday afternoon, as officials were waiting for Indiana Michigan Power crews to address any safety concerns with the broken power pole before re-opening the street.
