PORTAGE, MI : Police ID boy hit, killed while returning from field trip on Tuesday, July 25, 2017
Portage police are identifying the 7-year-old boy who was hit and killed while walking back from a summer camp field trip.
Officers Wednesday said Nicolaus Moehle of Texas Township was the boy who died hours after the Tuesday afternoon crash near 12th Street Elementary School.
Michelle Karpinski with Portage Public Schools said the boy was coming back from a field trip for an enrichment program about insects when he was hit by a car.
A woman who lives near the scene of the crash says the female driver didn’t stop.
“I don’t know what she was looking at, or I don’t know what she was doing, she should have stopped when she seen (sic) those kids,” said Bea Ellison.
Wednesday, a makeshift memorial began forming at the site of the crash. Flowers were piled up along the roadside.
Dave Szybala didn’t know Nicolaus, but he dropped off a stuffed bear to show his support.
“For the parents, for the driver, for the chaperones, for the children who were there, it’s just, we pray for them,” said Szybala.
Authorities say the female driver involved in the crash is cooperating with the investigation. Officers said alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
Karpinski said the summer camp the boy attended has been cancelled for the rest of the week. A decision will be made later about whether to cancel the rest of the two-week camp.
