One person is dead after a motorcycle accident in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Saturday.
Jeffrey Breitkopf, 74, of Selden, New York was killed while riding a motorcycle through the park on Little River Road at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, according to a release from GSMNP.
Breitkopf was headed west on Little River Road when his motorcycle strayed from the pavement and hit a tree before falling an estimated 15 feet into the river below. According to the report, the accident occurred 2.2 miles west of the intersection of Little River Road and Elkmont Road.
Rangers from GSMNP and crews from the Gatlinburg Fire Department responded to the scene and lifted Breitkopf from the river using a rescue basket. He was then transported to LeConte Medical Center at 11:20 a.m. before being flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
