Beckley, W.V : Two people injured in Serious accident near Hico on Monday afternoon, June 20, 2016
The cause of a crash on U.S.19 near Hico that sent two people to a Charleston hospital Monday afternoon is still under investigation.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found an SUV had collided with two tractor-trailers, causing major damage to all three vehicles.
Officials at the scene said a preliminary investigation found the SUV was traveling north on U.S. 19 when it ran off the road. Upon re-entry the vehicle struck the rear of the first rig. The SUV then crossed the median, struck the rear axles of a truck loaded with recycling.
The SUV was occupied by two women from Pittsburgh, ages 58 and 36. One was listed in critical condition and the other stable Monday evening at Charleston Area Medical Center, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. Their names were not released.
Fire crews had to extract the occupants of the SUV before giving medical treatment.
The drivers of the tractor-trailers were uninjured. For more than two hours the southbound lane of U.S. 19 was closed as emergency crews worked the scene.
Emergency personnel from the Ansted, Nuttall and Fayetteville fire departments and the Fayette County Sheriff's Office responded.
