Two Harbors,MN : Cloquet man dies from injuries suffered in Highway 61 crash on December, Saturday 2nd 2017
A Cloquet man has died from injuries suffered in a head-on crash on Minnesota Highway 61 near Knife River.
Cole Drechsler, 20, was driving south just before 11 p.m. Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a car traveling north in the southbound lanes. The driver of the other car, Philip Bergerson, 63, of Bonita Springs, Fla., died at the scene.
Drechsler's passenger, Sarah Buscher, 19, also of Cloquet, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Drechsler had been in critical condition at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. A journal entry on his CaringBridge website Wednesday afternoon noted that he was going into surgery. An entry later Wednesday from Drechsler's family said that "we appreciate all your prayers, but God had something else planned for this amazing young man. He is now one of His angels."
All, including Bergerson, were wearing seatbelts. No alcohol was detected related to Drechsler, and it isn't yet known whether it was a factor with Bergerson. The accident occurred about 20 miles north of Duluth, near Salakka Road. The crash remains under investigation.
