Minneapolis, MN : Woman running to catch a bus Sunday morning was severely injured when she was struck by a minivan on September 7th 2014
A woman running to catch a bus Sunday morning was severely injured when she was struck by a minivan in the 2900 block of Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis.
Preliminary investigation indicates the woman ran across the four-lane road in mid-block shortly before 11 a.m. in an attempt to catch a bus stopped in the northbound lane of Cedar Avenue, said John Elder, spokesman for the Minneapolis Police Department.
The driver of the van stopped and helped the woman, who was listed in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.
"We see a great number of these crashes," Elder said, noting that these types of accidents are less likely if pedestrians cross in crosswalks or at intersections.
"Drivers are far more likely to see people crossing at an intersection," he said. "In addition, it is law in Minnesota that drivers should maintain a speed where they can safely stop to avoid hitting someone."
However, he noted, in this case, it doesn't appear that the driver was speeding nor that alcohol was a factor.
"It is a tragedy, it truly is," Elder said.
