Details on Monday’s late-night car crash, which left over 1,000 Duke Energy customers without power for seven hours, have been released.

At about 11:30 p.m., 24-year-old Courtney Ann Van Zandt was coming up to a left-hand curve while driving west on West Fort Island Trail near Crystal River, according to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) crash report.

While taking the curve near West Dixie Shores Drive, Zandt lost control of her car.

The car and went into the eastbound lane, spun counterclockwise, traveled off the road and hit a utility pole with its right side, knocking the pole over and causing Zandt’s car and surrounding grasses to catch fire, according to FHP. Zandt’s car continued spinning and eventually overturned onto its left side.

Zandt, from Crystal River, was transported by Nature Coast EMS to Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center for treatment for non-incapacitating injuries, according to FHP.

FHP estimated Zandt’s speed on West Fort Island Trail to be 55 miles per hour. The roadway’s post speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

Duke Energy was called in 20 minutes after midnight on Tuesday to repair the downed power pole and lines, which left about 1,100 customers without power for roughly seven hours until the pole was repaired, according to the power company.

Charges are still pending.
