San Diego, CA : Navy master chief killed in motorcycle crash on Interstate 5 in the South Bay on Monday, Aug 31, 2015
Authorities released the name Tuesday of a 37-year-old Navy man from Chula Vista who died in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 5 in the South Bay.
Kyle Sutton, a master chief petty officer assigned to the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island, was heading south when he lost control of his two-wheeler near Eighth Street in National City about 6:15 a.m. Monday, according to military officials and the California Highway Patrol.
Sutton fell onto the roadway and was run over by the rear tires of a tractor-trailer, the county Medical Examiner's Office reported. The Tennessee native died at the scene.
In a posting on the Makin Island's Facebook page, the commanding officer of the ship, Capt. Jon Rodgers, praised Sutton as a "tough, fair and courageously honest" serviceman.
"The obvious shock, tears and outpouring of assistance by the San Diego waterfront and across the globe is testament to the character and broad influence of Master Chief Sutton," Rodgers wrote.
