Talala, OK : Nowata man killed in crash with tractor-trailer on U.S. 169 north of Talala on Thursday morning, July 21, 2016

A 48-year-old Nowata man died after his pickup crashed into an 18-wheeler on a Rogers County highway Thursday morning, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
Giles Vaughan Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 1½ miles north of Talala.

A tractor-trailer hauling lumber was heading north on U.S. 169 around 6:40 a.m. when it swerved right in an attempt to avoid a southbound pickup driven by Vaughan that crossed the center line of the two-lane highway, OHP spokesman Dwight Durant said. The pickup struck the rear of the trailer, causing the semi to flip and block both lanes.

Vaughan died at the scene, and the semi driver, 43-year-old Shawn Denham of Tulsa, was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Both lanes were closed for nearly four hours while authorities investigated the crash and crews removed the semi from the highway. They reopened southbound lanes about 10:20 a.m.; the northbound lanes remained closed for several hours into the afternoon.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
