Statesville, N. C : 10 injured in chain-reaction wreck on Interstate 77 in Iredell Saturday morning, November 5, 2016
Statesville, North Carolina
Ten people, including a family of five, were transported to Iredell County hospitals with minor injuries Saturday morning after five cars were involved in a wreck on Interstate 77, officials said.
Trooper B.A. Ketner with the N.C. Highway Patrol said none of the injuries are expected to be life-threatening.
The collisions occurred around 10:45 a.m. at the 38 mile marker in the northbound lane, Ketner said. Traffic was slow due to a previous two-car crash a mile or so up the road, he said.
The male driver of an SUV rear-ended the pickup truck in front of him, Ketner said. The pickup in turn struck two SUVs, one of which then struck a tractor-trailer.
“It was all a chain-raction type of thing that was caused by the original SUV,” Ketner said.
The driver of the first SUV, and four family members in the vehicle with him, were transported to Davis Regional Medical Center. Three patients, who were inside the pickup, were transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital.
A mother and son, inside one of the other SUVs, were taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
The names of all those involved were not immediately available.
After the accident, the northbound lanes were closed and traffic was routed through the emergency lane. It took about an hour to clear the roadway, Ketner said.
Ketner said the driver of the first SUV will be charged with failure to reduce speed.
No major injuries were reported in the earlier collision that caused the slowed traffic, Ketner said.
