West Melbourne, FL : Palm Bay man is facing serious charges after he nearly drove head-on into a police officer’s cruiser on Wednesday September 24th 2014
A Palm Bay man is facing serious charges after he nearly drove head-on into a West Melbourne police officer’s cruiser, police said.
Police were looking for David Vaughn. He was wanted for fleeing and eluding, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer after police said he narrowly missed striking an officer in Melbourne Village Wednesday morning.
Officers were trying to pull Vaughn over near New Haven Avenue and Dayton Boulevard when he allegedly sped off into Melbourne Village.
The officer was able to quickly back up the car and avoid the crash.
A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle led police to a home nearby, where one person was arrested on a violation of probation charge and Vaughn was taken into custody.
Residents weren’t quite sure what to think when they spotted police on Bay Harbor Boulevard with guns drawn.
“It seemed the best thing to do was stay out of their way and let them do their work. I watched from the window. It seemed safer," said neighbor John Gerard.
Vaughn is being held in jail on a $31,000 bond.
